Whether you are an experienced veteran or a complete rookie, you will find The Paintball Scenario Field Manual to be a fun and valuable guide to the world of scenario paintball. New players will find helpful information on how to join or start a scenario paintall team, a list of gear to take to their first event and a simple glossary of paintball terms to help better understand the lingo. Experienced players may appreciate the sections on field communication, map reading and special rule use for medics, tanks and more. This paintball book can even be used as a guide to help advanced players run their own small scenario events on private land.
This paintball book can improve your scenario team’s effectiveness by giving you the tools you need to communicate and work together as a team. The communication section is practical, simple and easy to understand. It illustrates field tested communication tools that have been used by police, the military and in tactical simulations for decades. The section on communication includes:
With these tools in hand, your team will be better equipped to respond to the dynamic and changing conditions found on the scenario field. You will find it possible to pull off exploits on the field that you never imagined possible after a little practice.
When proper safety precautions are followed, paintball is an extremely safe sport. However, accidents do sometimes happen. This paintball book includes a handy pocket guide to common field injuries and their treatments. A few of the injuries discussed in the book include heat exhaustion, snake bites, tick bites and nose bleeds. Where applicable, each entry has information on when to call the doctor or dial 911 when minor injuries become serious.
A short chapter on camp safety shares 35+ tips for keeping campsites safe during scenario events. Special attention is focused on CO2 / HPA and paintball marker safety instructions. For example:
"Do not shoot the campfire with your marker. This will not look as cool as you think and it WILL throw a small burning ember (that you will not see) more than 30 feet away to land on one of those flammable objects we don't want to burn."
Players that own this book reference these two safety sections frequently during scenario paintball events. When you get your own copy, it's a good idea to store it with your paintball gear bag or in the glove compartment of your vehicle so it doesn't get left behind when you go to the field.
Map reading is a lost art to most people today. Your team will dominate the field when you learn to use topographical maps to identify natural cover and observation points in the terrain. Chapter 8 of the Paintball Scenario Field Manual reviews terrain symbols found on topographical maps. You will also learn in this section how to modify ordinary field maps or make your own. The resources section in the back of the book contains grid paper to help you get started. Other map symbols you will learn to identify in this chapter include:
Nearly 2,000 scenario players have used this paintball book to improve their game. Several major fields, including DFW Adventure Park in Roanoke, TX, use the included Lanstrade Rule System for every paintball event held at their field. Having known Mad Ivan since D-Day 2005, this man knows A LOT. I have a copy sitting not 5 feet from me, and it has been a very good reference. Pick one up, if you can. The $20 is well worth it.
- Ryan Cash, Black Light Company
All in all, this is a solid and well-thought all-around reference for paintball players at any level of experience in the scenario/RTS style.

"Mad" Ivan Stober attended his first paintball event in 1986 in Grand Prarie, Texas. Then the game was played with shop goggles and pump guns. He quit playing for a period of years after seeing another player seriously injured on the field. He returned to the game in 1991 when safety equipment and procedures made the game safe to play. His keen attention to field safety results from this real life experience and is reflected in almost every section of this paintball book.
In 1996, Ivan opened one of the largest indoor paintball fields in the state of Texas. The location at the intersection of 8th Ave. and Berry St. in Fort Worth sported more than 33,000 sq. ft. of playable space. During the ten years that the field was in operation, Ivan had the pleasure of working with more than 20,000 players from all across the United States. Ivan expanded his business in late 2003 to include a paintball pro shop at Six Flags Mall in Arlington. Both were closed in 2006. Ivan transitioned to producing scenario paintball games exclusively. In his career, he has produced more than 100 scenario paintball games, most of them based upon actual historical battles.
Ivan has gained much knowledge of the sport in his years of producing and playing scenario paintball events. In 2005, he decided to write the Paintball Scenario Field Manual to share his knowledge with other paintball players. It was first published in early 2006. Since then, portions of the book have been referenced in numerous industry magazines. It is considered by some to be the definitive guide to scenario paintball.
